On Nov 20th 2012 UBICITEC e.V., the European Center for Ubiquitous Technologies and Smart Cities, was founded by Prof. Pedro José Marrón (University Duisburg-Essen) and twelve other founding members from World class academic and industrial institutions.
The inauguration meeting started with greetings from Gérald Santucci, the Head of unit “Knowledge Sharing” at DG-CONNECT from the European Commission, followed by a welcome from Walter Flaig a representative of the Ministry for Economy, Energy, Industry, SME and Trade. Prof. Pedro José Marrón opened a series of selected talks on the topic of Smart Cities followed by Eric Gaudillat (Network Technologies, European Commission), Antonio Marqués (ETRA I+D, Spain), Prof. Aníbal Ollero (University of Sevilla), and Dr. Yee Wei Law (University of Melbourne). They presented different aspects on the topic of Smart Cities.
Mario Rico and Mariano Lamarca from the 22@Barcelona Smart City project presented the Smart City of Barcelona via video conference. The meeting was closed with warm wishes for success from the rector of the University Duisburg-Essen which shows the commitment of the University of Duisburg-Essen to the topics addressed by UBICITEC e.V. A wonderful buffet and an inspired get together made the inauguration of UBICITEC e.V. a memorable event.
